本病传播速度快、发病较缓慢、死亡率极高。
从 1981年 6月 5 日首次证实至今， AIDS 已经夺去了超过 2500万人的生命，AIDS 的潜伏期很长，一般为 2-10年，总死亡率几乎为 100%，90%是在诊断之后 2年内死亡。
2011年 10月，卫生部部长陈竺表示：截至 2011年 9月底，中国累计报告艾滋病病毒感染者和病人 42.9万例，其中病人 16.4万例，死亡 8.6万例[1]。
由于艾滋病传播迅速，潜伏期长，病亡率高，严重影响人类健康，所以引起全世界的广泛关注。
